As a dentist, I love that this profession is very dynamic. All our patients are unique and deserve to receive dental care that reflects their individual needs. I enjoy problem solving and love to find the solution for each patient to improve their quality of life. Likewise, I appreciate being part of people’s lives and helping them achieve what they want from dental care. Seeing a smiling, happy patient at the end of an appointment, and hearing them express their thanks at making it comfortable, is deeply rewarding.

Background, Education, and In Practice
Dentist = (d)octor+(en)gineer+ar(tist)
Before becoming a dentist, Dr. Kang was a successful engineer. He graduated from the University of California, Berkeley, one of the nation’s top engineering institutions, with his Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering.
This undergraduate education developed Dr. Kang’s technical skills and enhanced his artistic abilities. As he was growing up, Dr. Kang’s mother exposed him to Fine Arts, with a focus on sculptures and ceramics. In his adolescence he spent time molding pottery with his mother. Additionally, he expanded his finger strength and flexibility by playing the clarinet for ten years.
The combination of technical, engineering, and artistic endeavors has honed Dr. Kang’s hand-eye coordination, improved his hand dexterity, and given him a critical eye to aesthetic perfection.
During his time as a mechanical engineer, Dr. Kang found himself dazzled by the sophisticated machinery used by his dentist at his neighborhood clinic. He was thoroughly impressed by her technical skill and perceptual abilities, along with the compassion and care with which she treated patients, who left their appointments pleased with the care they received. That experience led him to adjust his career path.
Prior to dental school, Dr. Kang conducted research in a non-destructive method of diagnosis of early dental cavities, as well as applications for a variety of laser techniques as preventive tools in dentistry. His research continued throughout his time in dental school – at the University of the Pacific Arthur A. Dugoni School of Dentistry in San Francisco – where he obtained his Doctorate of Dental Surgery (DDS). He then went on to complete a rigorous General Practice Residency at St. Charles Hospital and Rehabilitation Center.
Through his in-depth clinical and research experiences, Dr. Kang has come to understand the interdisciplinary nature of dentistry and appreciate the profession on a scientific, engineering, and personal level. He has published over 20 publications that show his passion for research. He has also been fascinated to experience how biological and engineering research can directly affect progress in the profession of dentistry.
